There seems to be little doubt the Blue Jackets have gotten better in each of the four games of the team's current win streak.
So what can Columbus do for an encore against the first-place New York Islanders?
OK, it's hard to imagine a much better effort than what the team turned in during Tuesday night's 3-0 blanking of the Capitals, as the defending Stanley Cup champions didn't get much traction in the game outside of isolated scoring chances until the final four minutes.

The Blue Jackets didn't shy away from being proud of the performance. Mere hours after saying the Blue Jackets' effort was "pathetic" in a 4-0 loss to the Caps on Dec. 8, Washington's last visit to Nationwide Arena, captain Nick Foligno said his team was "dominating" in its victory two days ago against the Caps.
Now, the goal is to keep it going.

Torts talks about keeping win streak going

"That's two of them (in a row)," head coach John Tortorella said. "Someone asked me after the last game, have you found the consistency? You don't find consistency in one game. It has to be who you are. Now we've put a couple of them together. Hopefully we can continue, and then maybe we can talk about who we are as far as that part of the game."
The performance against Washington was another strong data point, but in hockey, streaks have shelf lives. The Blue Jackets knew their recent losing streak would end at some point, and it was capped at five when Columbus won last Tuesday at Colorado.
Now it's a four-game win streak, and things aren't always going to be this sunny and rosy, either. In the course of an 82-game season, though, the aim is to lengthen the peaks and keep the valleys as small as possible.
PRACTICE REPORT: CBJ not standings watching -- yet
How is that done? By turning in solid efforts and playing as a cohesive unit. That's what the Blue Jackets did in the win against Washington.
"We just played as a five-man unit the whole game," Foligno said. "If you really watch our team, there was never somebody getting beat, it was always somebody covering for them. Forechecking, it was three guys, five guys. It was amazing. As soon as they dumped it in, it was five guys arriving. The cohesion we had tonight was as good as I've seen it, and it's a great sign going forward."
Columbus didn't skate either Sunday or Monday after beating Vegas on Saturday. The team flew back to Columbus on Sunday morning, then had the rest of the day off, and Monday's practice was canceled shortly before it was to begin because of a potential gas leak in the area around Nationwide Arena.
Perhaps Tortorella had that in mind when the team decided to cancel Wednesday's scheduled practice as well. The team will skate Thursday morning and then be ready to try to keep the good vibes going against the Islanders.
"Winning solves everything," Atkinson said. "You get days off, players are happy, guys are playing with confidence, excited to come to the rink and get better when we have days of practice. We've played the last two games against two of the best teams in the league. We have to use that and feel good about ourselves and continue to get better."

Know The Foe
Much to the surprise of most hockey observers, first-year head coach Barry Trotz has the Islanders atop the Metropolitan Division, ahead of the last two Stanley Cup champs as well as the upstart Blue Jackets, despite the fact the team missed the playoffs last year and lost John Tavares to free agency in the offseason.
The main reason is a commitment to defense, including a league-best mark of 2.34 goals allowed per game, well ahead of second-place Dallas. The Islanders simply make it hard for the opposition to score, especially at 5-on-5, where New York has allowed just a league-best 83 goals (1.48 per game). All this after the Islanders gave up 293 goals last year, the most in the NHL since Philadelphia in 2007.
The team has been strong in net, where Thomas Greiss and Robin Lehner have turned into quite a tandem. Lehner has experienced a career renaissance with the Islanders, starting 29 games and going 17-9-4 with a 2.09 goals-against average and .929 save percentage. Greiss has posted similar numbers in 27 starts (16-8-2, 2.28, .927). The two are 1-2 in the NHL in GAA among goalies with at least 20 starts.
At 2.82 goals per game, the Isles are 24th in the NHL in scoring. Captain Anders Lee leads the team with 18 goals and has 38 points, while second-year standout Mathew Barzal leads the team in scoring with a 16-32-48 line. Josh Bailey adds 12 goals and 28 assists for 40 points, and Brock Nelson has a 17-19-36 line. Ryan Pulock is the top-scoring D-man with 26 points.
